  10. New Creator is a simple, yet powerful program designed to enhance the ease of 
  11. use of the Macintosh.  New Creator fixes the creator of some files, making them 
  12. openable from the Finder.  It requires a Macintosh Plus or higher, preferrably with a hard 
  13. disk, and System 4.1 and up.  I am distributing this program as ShareWare:  Feel free to 
  14. try New Creator and give it to anyone you wish, but I ask that you always include this 
  15. documentation with it.  You may not sell it for a profit.  If you decide to use New 
  16. Creator, send $10 or however much money itﾕs worth to you to my address shown at the 
  17. bottom of this text.

  20. The main objective of New Creator is to reduce the number of times users see this Finder 
  21. Alert:

  25. This alert (pictured above) appears when you try to open a document that the Finder 
  26. doesnﾕt recognize.  The easiest way to get around this alert is to open the file from within a 
  27. different application, but it is still inconvenient and confusing, especially on a large hard 
  28. disk.  New Creator can eliminate this step by changing the creator of the file that doesnﾕt 
  29. open.  The advantage of this method is that you can do your entire hard disk once and for 
  30. all.  This can be done with many utility programs, but New Creator makes it much easier 
  31. and it can search an entire Hard Disk or just a specific folder for files to change.
  32. Be warned that if used improperly, New Creator can change the creator of a 
  33. document to the wrong application, actually causing that Finder Alert to appear.  If you do 
  34. change the wrong file, or many files, it is just as easy to change them back.  However, if 
  35. you follow these instructions, there is virtually no risk of anything going wrong.

  38. Step 1:     Set Default Applications
  39. ･ Open New Creator and click the Preferences button.
  40. ･ Choose the application you would like Paint, Pict, and Text files to open.  If 
  41. you do not deal with one of those types, simply ignore them for now.
  42. ･ Click on the button displaying the name of an application for each of the file 
  43. types, then select the application you would like to replace it with in the 
  44. dialog box that  appears.
  45. ･ When you are finished, click the OK button.  If you made a mistake, you 
  46. can click the Cancel button.
  47. Step 2:    Change One File
  48. ･ Make sure the File radio button is selected at the top-left corner of the 
  49. window.
  50. ･ Use the pop-up menu labeled From: and choose the file type you would like 
  51. to change.
  52. ･ Click the Choose File button and open any document that does not open 
  53. from the Finder.
  54. ･ If you would like to verify that you chose the correct document, click the 
  55. Examine File button and you will see a small portion of the file in a 
  56. window.
  57. ･ Click the Change Creator button.
  58. Step 3:    Check the File
  59. ･ To make sure that everything went okay, quit the program and find the file 
  60. you changed in Step 2 from the Finder.
  61. ･ Select Get Info for that file.  Check that the file now belongs to the program 
  62. you selected in Step 1.
  63. ･ If it does, close Get Info and open the file.
  64. ･ The correct application should now open the document and import it as a 
  65. new document.  If it does, you may quit that application and proceed with 
  66. New Creator.
  67. ･ If you get an error message, this application is probably incompatible with 
  68. the file you just changed and you must choose another (Go back to step 1).
  69. Step 4:    Search a Volume
  70. ･ Assuming that you tested one file in steps 2 and 3, you can now search an 
  71. entire volume for files of a specific type.
  72. ･ Open New Creator and set the From: pop-up menu appropriately, just as 
  73. you did in step 2.
  74. ･ Select the Volume radio button and click the Choose Volume button.
  75. ･ Now use the standard dialog box to get to the volume you would like to 
  76. search.  When it is open, click the Select button.
  77. ･ If the name of the volume displayed next to Item Selected: is correct, click 
  78. the Search Volume button.  An alert appears to verify what you just chose to 
  79. do, and if it is correct, click the OK button.  The search is very quick, 
  80. taking seconds on a disk, and hardly more than a minute on a large hard 
  81. disk.
  82. ･ When it has completed, another alert tells you it is finished.
  83. Step 5:    Search a Folder
  84. ･ This optional step is a more complicated, but slightly more versatile way of 
  85. searching a volume, especially if you want some files of a certain type 
  86. changed but not others.
  87. ･ Proceed exactly as in step 4, substituting Folder for Volume.
  88. ･ When it is time to select the folder to search, you must open the folder, then 
  89. click Select.
  90. ･ Only files within that folder and folders within that folder will be searched.

  93. As I stated at the beginning, please send your payment to me if you choose to use 
  94. this program so I can create more useful utilities for the benifit of everyone.  I would also 
  95. appreciate comments (almost as much as money!) and suggestions for future versions.  If 
  96. you find an important bug in New Creator that causes a problem, send a detailed 
  97. description of the problem and I will try to send you a corrected version.  Thank you for
